A special thanks to the Owen, Carpenter, & Marrs racing teams for last night’s hard pre-race day crunch work. I have to say I am beyond impressed at how much we accomplished last night.
Thanks to all the donated paint and time along the way I have my 2016 racing boat ready to put in the river. Thanks to my neighbor and my picking skills take a look at the industrial steel 2x4 materials for a more user friendly trailer this year.
Pop rivets and a wiz wheel and its done. Plus a couple tent poles and a donated handle from something.
LOL.
And 2 harbor freight tires.

This year’s boat is still powered by a 3rd generation custom 12 speed bicycle drive unit with  a smaller pitch prop than last year. The boat was test floated a  month ago with a few leak issues and afterward a gear change for more speed.
Last year I was not strong enough to pedal the hot rod Lincoln boat and the first try this year it was too easy. Changing the ratio from 9.8 – 1 to 17-1 I am hoping to be much closer to a final drive ratio that will move the boat better in the water. Some of the cardboard is still soggy from the test run so I am not sure if it will make it to the finish line but it sure won’t be my first sinking vessel in the event. I am positive I will have a blast and do my best to stay upright.

The boat is not as stable as I would like but…..
I did not flip over during the test float so I am hopeful.
If I get the titanic award or come in last I can assure one thing, I will be laughing harder than the people not brave enough to try this challenging event.

A brand new 2016 creation by Ralph Huey (the EAGLET). See the building process and the TEST Flight below.
The Eaglet was raffled off on July 16, 2016 and will be raced in New Richmond on August 20th in the youth category.

Loveland Ohio’s  Fraternal Order of Eagles #3006  has a fund raiser each year for Children’s Hospital Christmas in July event.  Typically I donate some form of artwork to be auctioned off and the money is donated to the event. There has been growing interest of my involvement in the cardboard boat race and I am expecting 20 to 30 people to attend river days this year from the F.O.E. 3006 to watch the regatta. I decided I would build a cardboard boat for the Christmas in July event to be auctioned as my donated piece of artwork and it did very well to help the charity funds grow.

Ralph Huey has only been Building & Racing his creations for 3 years...his talent & skills are extraordinary. His first attempt was the yellow Ford Roadster hot rod pictured below...it sits proudly on display in the Museum . His second years entry was a 3/4 scale "out-house" and in 2015,  his "matte black" 1937 Lincoln Zepher took the 1st Place Peoples Choice Trophy.

We are looking forward to Ralph's creation for the 2016 Regatta. ...."vroom, vroom".
